Julie Abraham - Are Girls Necessary? : Lesbian Writing and Modern Histories - Lesbian Non-Fiction Books All Books by Julie Abraham - Author of : Are Girls Necessary? : Lesbian Writing and Modern Histories
Paperback (February 1996)
Routledge; ISBN: 0415914574

"Lesbian Literature Studies; This text is a provocative study of 20th-century lesbian writing. Abraham takes her point of departure as the dilemma of the so-called "lesbian novel", for in modeling itself after heterosexual romance plots, the lesbianism of these works becomes a descendant of a traditional patriarchal order. Examining the development of lesbian writing in English across the 20th Century, Abraham identifies a shift from this "romance" model to a more complicated "history" model. The great modernists, Woolf and Stein, as well as the popular writers of succeeding generations, like Mary Renault, looked to historical narratives, creating an important change in the way the "lesbian story" is built. The changes in lesbian writing, from the early romance plots through to the post-1960's liberation movement experiments, are Abraham's geography. Within it, she offers detailed readings of major writers in several genres, from high modern to pulp, both British and American. This book should be useful reading for the study of lesbian literature, the literary revolutions of modernism and of the 1960s, and for the study of ideology and fiction."

Paperback - 256 pages 0 edition (May 15, 1999)
Columbia Univ Pr; ISBN: 0231109253

"Lesbian Literature Studies; This book gathers the work of more than 100 female poets, of primarily British and American descent, since the 17th century. Emma Donoghue's astute introductory essay suggests a coherent tradition between the poetry of pre-20th-century romantic friendships and explicit contemporary lesbian poetry. She includes work by well-known writers such as Aphra Behn, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Adrienne Rich, and Audre Lorde, and also introduces the work of lesser-known historical writers. The brief biographies of the poets at the end of the book illustrate not only the varied backgrounds of these writers working outside the mainstream, but also the kinds of networks and alliances they formed to sustain one another."
