~*~ Featured Book Review ~*~
"This book examines the stories of lesbian and bisexual women in a Northeast community who share who they are, how they have come to see themselves as lesbian or bisexual, and what those identities mean to them. Drawing on social constructionist approaches to identity, Kristin G. Esterberg argues that identities are multiple and contingent. Created within the context of specific communities and within specific relationships, lesbian and bisexual identities are ways of sorting through experiences of desires and attractions, relationships, and politics. Their meanings change over time as women grow older and have more varied experiences, as the communities and sociopolitical worlds in which they live change, and as their life circumstances alter.
In interviews conducted over a four-year time period, women describe the lesbian community they live in; how they see its structure, its social groups, its informal rules and norms for behavior; and their places inside -- or on the margins of -- the community. Lesbian and Bisexual Identities reveals how women fall in and out of love, how they "perform" lesbian or bisexual identity through clothing, hairstyle, body language, and talk, and many other aspects typically not considered. The women present a variety of accounts. Some consider themselves "lesbian from birth" and have constructed their lives accordingly, while others have experienced significant shifts in their identities, depending on the influences of feminism, progressive politics, the visibility of the lesbian community, and other factors. Esterberg offers vivid accounts that defy the stereotypes so commonly offered. Lesbian and Bisexual Identities not only presents women's stories in their own words, it moves beyond storytelling to understand how these accounts resonate with social science theories of identity and community."

Larry P. Gross - Contested Closets: The Politics and Ethics of Outing - GLBT Non Fiction All Books by Larry P. Gross - Author of : Contested Closets: The Politics and Ethics of Outing
Paperback - 345 pages (October 1993)
Univ of Minnesota Pr (Txt); ISBN: 0816621799

"GLBT Studies/Theory; This is a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate among journalists and gay activists over "outing", the practice of revealing the homosexuality of politicians and celebrities in the closet. Gross, a professor of communications at the University of Pennsylvania, is an eloquent defender of the controversial practice, but one of the greatest strengths of this book is the evenhandedness with which he presents the arguments of each side. He argues that outing is a practice with "a long past, if only a short history", and spends much of the book's first half putting it into a historical context. In the course of doing so, he discusses the nature and construction of gay identity and a history of the outing controversies of the past ten years."

Valerie Lehr - Queer Family Values : Debunking the Myth of the Nuclear Family - GLBT Non Fiction All Books by Valerie Lehr - Author of : Queer Family Values : Debunking the Myth of the Nuclear Family
Paperback - 224 pages (June 1999)
Temple Univ Press; ISBN: 1566396840

"GLBT Studies/Theory; The flaw in the fight for gay and lesbian marriage rights, argues Lehr in Queer Family Values, lies in its failure to call into question the forms of oppression—gender, racial, and economic—that lead society to privilege the nuclear family. Lehr calls for activists to counter conservative discourses that see the nuclear family—what Lehr considers a socially defined institution that works to maintain, in various ways, inequalities among people—as the only responsible and mature family alternative. She asks for an approach to family issues and individual liberty that challenges power rather than demands access to privilege. She advocates social policies that enhance the freedom of all people, not simply those gay and lesbian adults seeking to be part of the dominant vision of family in our society."
