"It's here and it's queer -- popular culture inhabits all our lives, whether it comes in the form of movies or magazines, TV or shopping. A Queer Romance brings together critics, writers and artists to debate the possibilities of popular culture for lesbians and gay men.
In this profusely illustrated and challenging collection, the contributors variously revisit debates about the gaze to provide a new theory of Queer viewing; discuss texts coded as queer -- from lesbian vampires to Hollywood's use of gay codes in mainstream films such as Top Gun and Black Widow; consider the sexual and cultural narratives at play in the world of home shopping catalogs in Gregg Woods' essay ``We're Here, We're Queer, and We're Not Going Catalog Shopping"; explore the pleasures and perils of gay cultural production, from the radically queer film-making of Monika Treut to the wild world of homocore fanzines, and address the possibilities of texts claiming to be for the gay spectator -- from pornography ``by women, for women and about women'' to ``Out'' TV."

~*~ Featured Book Review ~*~
"Just what is Tongzhi? Tongzhi is the most popular contemporary Chinese word for lesbians, bisexuals, and gay people. The word, which has very positive historical references, was a Chinese translation from the Soviet communist term comrade. It was appropriated by a Hong Kong gay activist in 1989 for the first Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in Hong Kong by its organizers, who wanted to employ an indigenous representation of same-sex eroticism. The term 'homosexual' was inappropriate because of its use as a medical term denoting sickness and pathology. Within a few years, tongzhi became a widely used term in Hong Kong and Taiwan and is often used interchangeably with the English term gay.
But terms such as gay, lesbian, and queer are Anglo-Saxon in origin, with specific histories that cannot capture the indigenous features of Chinese same-sex relationships. Tongzhi implies and includes much more. S/Mers, transvestites, and other fetishists and members of the Chinese sexual counterculture who may be quite heterosexual are also tongzhi. And the term has meaning beyond the sexual: it embodies a strong sentiment for integrating the sexual (legitimizing same-sex love), the political (sharing the goals of combating heterosexism) and the cultural (reappropriating their Chinese identity).
For researchers, activists, and sociologists, Tongzhi: Politics of Same-Sex Eroticism in Chinese Societies examines Chinese societies where the family-kinship system, rather than an sexuality, is taken as the basis of an individual's identity. With Tongzhi, you will come to understand the variations of same-sex erotica in different Chinese societies. Examining past and present treatment of the subject, including instances of discrimination against homosexuals, Tongzhi explores same-sex eroticism in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and explains the variations of categories and experiences of tongzhi in these countries.
Tongzhi brings you fascinating insight into: the history of same-sex eroticism in China coming out in Chinese society how colonialism has affected sexual nonconformists in this region racial and sexual dynamics in Colonial Hong Kong the cultural politics of being a Tomboy/Girl in modern Hong Kong "queering the mainstream" with Tongzhi identity politics sexual/cultural diversities and differences among contemporary Chinese societies . . . and much more!
Tongzhi shows how culture influences identity and demonstrates how you can develop relevant strategies for successful activist movements. Discussing political movements for gay/lesbian/bisexual rights and the societal implications of same-sex eroticism, this intelligent book provides you with a clear understanding of the attitudes toward and meanings of being tongzhi today."

Paperback - 146 pages (August 1993)
Univ of Minnesota Pr (Txt); ISBN: 0816622450

"GLBT Studies/Culture; Doty, who teaches film and gay and lesbian studies at Lehigh University, is concerned in this volume with uncovering gay/lesbian/bisexual elements in unexpected places in popular culture. He wishes to challenge the politics of denotation and connotation'' in traditional "heterocentric" critical practice. Otherwise "heterocentric" texts can contain queer elements, and basically heterosexual, straight-identifying people can experience queer moments,'' he writes, especially if one understands "queer" as encompassing more than just sexual behavior, but, rather, a range of cultural phenomena as well."

"GLBT Studies/Culture; Queer Episodes in Music and Modern Identity approaches modern sexuality by way of music. Through the hidden or lost stories of composers, scholars, patrons, performers, audiences, repertoires, venues, and specific works, this intriguing volume explores points of intersection between music and queerness in Europe and the United States in the years 1870 to 1950--a period when dramatic changes in musical expression and in the expression of individual sexual identity played similar roles in washing away the certainties of the past.... Anna Livia & Kira Hall (Ed.) - Queerly Phrased: Language, Gender, and Sexuality - GLBT Non Fiction All Books by Anna Livia and Kira Hall - Editors of : Queerly Phrased: Language, Gender, and Sexuality
Paperback - 484 pages (November 1997)
Oxford University Press; ISBN: 0195104714

"GLBT Studies/Culture; Queerly Phrased is a pioneering collection of articles on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual language. Combining queer theory and feminist theory with the latest theories and findings in language and gender, the book expands the field well beyond the study of "gay slang" to consider gay dialects, like Polari in England, early modern discourse on gay practices, and late twentieth-century descriptions of homosexuality. The contributors examine the conversational patterns of queer speakers in a wide variety of settings from women's friendship groups to university rap groups and electronic mail postings. Taking a global, rather than regional approach, the essays include studies of the language use of sexually liminal communities in a variety of linguistic and cultural groups, such as lesbian speakers of American Sign Language, Japanese gay male couples, Hindi-speaking hijras (eunuchs) in North India, Hausa-speaking yan-dauda (transvestites) in Nigeria, and French and Yiddish gay groups. The most accessible and diverse collection of its kind, Queerly Phrased sets a new standard in the study of language's impact on the construction of sexuality."

Stephen O. Murray, Will Roscoe (Ed.)- Boy-Wives and Female Husbands : Studies of African Homosexualities - GLBT Non Fiction All Books by Stephen O. Murray and Will Roscoe - Editors of : Boy-Wives and Female Husbands : Studies of African Homosexualities
Paperback - 352 pages (February 2001)
St. Martin's Press (Short); ISBN: 0312238290

"GLBT Studies/Culture; Claims concerning the presence and status of homosexuality in historic African cultures have become central points of contention in debates among contemporary African Americans. Some of those involved in the debate have even asserted that the original languages of Africa contained no words for gay or lesbian, therefore concluding that they did not exist. As the first work of its kind on the subject, Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands answers an urgent need for accurate, well-researched, and balanced work on African sexuality. It offers perspectives from the fields of anthropology and history, along with extensive evidence from ethnographic and literary sources. The essays explore such topics as woman-woman marriages, early reports of Malagasy "berdaches," male homosexuality in contemporary West Africa, alternative gender identities among the Swahili, the regulation of sexuality in colonial Zimbabwe, and the portrayals of homosexuality in modern African literature."
