Books by John Lockhart - Author of : The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older Paperback: 288 pages (June 2002) Alyson Pubns; ISBN: 1555835910 "Self Help; Based on media representations alone, you might think that the average age of American gay men is approximately 28. But the fact is, the gay population is aging at the same rate as the general population, with one in five over the age of 65. And while the heterosexual population is awash with representations of seniors, the gay population has virtually nothing in the way of older role models. John Lockhart provides a series of memorable snapshots of aging gay American men in these interviews crossing all regional, financial, and ethnic boundaries. The men reflect on a broad spectrum of issues: sex, spirituality, self-image, finances, health, and retirement living. A straightforward and practical book, The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older gives gay men a touchstone for planning their years as vital, productive, passionate seniors." Books by Bruce
Shenitz and Andrew Holleran -
Editors of : The Man I Might Become: Gay Men Write
About Their Fathers Paperback: 320 pages - (November 2002) Marlowe & Co; ISBN: 1569245649 ~*~ Featured Book Review ~*~ "Gay Studies; Self Help; Fathers and sons: Writers throughout history have grappled with the relationships between them. Now The Man I Might Become: Gay Men Write About Their Fathers assembles twenty-eight essays, which, taken together, offer as complete a picture as we have ever had of how the lives of gay sons and their fathers unfold. "The anecdotes one hears in any gay lifetime," writes Andrew Holleran, in his foreword, "include every conceivable combination of father and sons—fathers who were despised, adored, crucial, irrelevant, remote or intimate—just like the fathers of straight men and women." From the first piece in the collection, Peter M. Krask’s "The Question I Asked Him," to the last, Bernard Cooper’s "Winner Take Nothing," the stories amply demonstrate this observation, and offer a moving pageant of lost opportunities and regrets, comforts and sorrows, hatred and affection. "These essays move sequentially from alienation toward reconciliation," writes editor Bruce Shenitz in his introduction, "with several intermediate steps—puzzled incomprehension, grudging acceptance, strained attempts at understanding—and a detour into sexual mythologies. Whether they are read in sequence or at random, they provide a rough typology of father-son relationships that are richly different from each other. There are no simple explanations for why some of these relationships deepen while others never move beyond painful confrontations; what these writings offer is the suggestion of a range of possibilities." The Man I Might Become offers an essential reading experience for every gay man coming to terms with his father, his family, and his own future as a man—and for any reader (straight or gay, parent or child) curious about the ways that we live with the legacy of our fathers." Books by Marc Vargo - Author of : Acts of Disclosure: The Coming-out Process of Contemporary Gay Men Paperback - 164 pages (May 1998) Haworth (T); ISBN: 1560239123 "Gay Self Help Books; Vargo explains the coming out process in great detail; he's very thorough and has facts to back up his claims. Rather than say, for instance, these are the stages parents go through when a son comes out to them, trust me, he describes various studies that have been done that actually document the stages, what percentage of parents go through each stage, etc. He's always careful to describe how the studies may be biased in one way or another. There are more than 40 footnotes to most chapters, so you can go straight to the source for more information if you want. Having some sort of factual basis to go on helped me tremendously. He also is good about illustrating the points he makes by using quotes from gay sons and their friends and family. At the end of each chapter, there are lists of suggestions that are very helpful. One particularly good section describes what characteristics are typical in parents who will have a difficult time accepting their sons gayness. Again, he's always careful to not make gross generalizations, but relies instead on reputable studies. "Coming Out; An Act of Kindness" is OK, but not as good as this one." Books by Daniel Wolfe - Author of : Men Like Us : The GMHC Complete Guide to Gay Men's Sexual, Physical, and Emotional Well-Being Paperback - 656 pages (April 18, 2000) Ballantine Books (Trd Pap); ISBN: 0345414950 "Gay Health; Self Help; Can't find your frenulum? Can't interpret your insurance? Can't name the major herbal remedy for prostate problems? Daniel Wolfe's amazing, enlightening, and physically weighty compendium on gay men's health can usher anyone through the major crises of life--grief, illness, bad hair--and offer sane advice on gay-specific issues, from coming out to harassment to spirituality within mainstream and alternative religions. Readers will expect a great deal of attention to HIV--and won't be disappointed--but may be surprised by the comprehensiveness of the section on recreational drugs, for example, or the attention devoted to the pharmacological treatments of depression. Passages on anal eroticism will help the reader chart new territory. Sections on exercise and nutrition are necessarily less complete. The text is supplemented with charts and sidebars (one of the best lists necessary legal documents for single or coupled men), as well as quotes from hundreds of gay men who were interviewed in person by Gay Men's Health Crisis or who responded to surveys ("My mind said I was walking home, but my body was walking to the sex club"). An essential resource for health care providers, therapists, and educators, Men Like Us also makes for lively casual reading, as in this word on allergies to latex condoms: "Although it sounds like a bad gay joke, don't eat bananas or nuts. They're among the foods, along with papaya and avocado, that can make a latex allergy worse." - Regina Marler (Amazon.com)" Click to buy this book in USA, Canada, UK: ![]() ![]() ![]() |
