Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit - Caravaggio's Secrets - Gay Non-Fiction Books All Books by Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit - Author of : Caravaggio's Secrets
Hardcover - 140 pages (September 15, 1998)
MIT Press; ISBN: 0262024497

"Gay Lifestyle and Culture; Many critics have explored the homoerotic message in the early portraits of the Baroque painter Michelangelo Caravaggio (1573-1610). In Caravaggio's Secrets, Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit emphasize instead the impenetrability of these portraits. The tension between erotic invitation and self-concealing retreat leads Bersani and Dutoit to conclude that the interest of these works is in their representation of an enigmatic address that solicits intimacy in order to block it with a secret.
Bersani and Dutoit offer a psychoanalytic reading of the enigmatic address as initiating relations grounded in paranoid fascination. They study Caravaggio's attempts to move beyond such relations, his experiments with a space no longer circumscribed by the mutual and paranoid, if erotically stimulating, fascination with imaginary secrets. In his most original work, Caravaggio proposes a radically new mode of connectedness, a nonerotic sensuality relevant to the most exciting attempts in our own time to rethink, perhaps even to reinvent, community."

David Deitcher - Dear Friends : American Photographs of Men Together, 1840-1918 - Gay Non-Fiction Books  All Books by David Deitcher - Author of : Dear Friends : American Photographs of Men Together, 1840-1918
Hardcover - 160 pages (May 2001)
Harry N Abrams; ISBN: 0810957124

"Gay Photography and Art; Lifestyle/Culture; This groundbreaking book presents rarely seen photographs that provide an entirely fresh perspective on male friendship in the 19th century. The poignant images in more than 100 early photographs, drawn from public and private collections, suggest a surprisingly broad-minded attitude toward physical intimacy between men, challenging the conventional view of the Victorian era as more inhibited than our own. Deitcher’s provocative text—combining history, social observation, pictorial analysis, and personal reflection—explores the nature of that same-sex affection and the meaning such pictures can hold for us today."

"Gay Lifestyle and Culture; Homosexuality is often seen as a purely urban experience, far removed from rural and small town life. Farm Boys undermines that cliché by telling the stories of more than three dozen gay men, ranging in age from 24 to 84, who grew up in farm families in the Midwest. Whether painful, funny, or matter-of-fact, these plain-spoken accounts will move and educate any reader, gay or not, from farm or city."

John Donald Gustav-Wrathall - Take the Young Stranger by the Hand : Same-Sex Relations and the YMCA - Gay Non-Fiction Books All Books by John Donald Gustav-Wrathall - Author of : Take the Young Stranger by the Hand : Same-Sex Relations and the YMCA
Hardcover - 288 pages (October 1998)
University of Chicago Press (Trd); ISBN: 0226907848

~*~ Featured Book Review ~*~
"Now associated with family health clubs, the YMCA's bland image is the result of relentless outreach and the studied avoidance of controversy. But, as John Gustav-Wrathall shows in his fascinating social history of the organization, the life of the YMCA has been filled with strife, tragedy, and irony. Its history has reflected the struggle and shifting societal mores about masculine friendship and intimacy.
Gustav-Wrathall traces the history of American gender and sexuality through a case study of this organization devoted to young men. In the nineteenth century, the YMCA was built on intense male friendships that involved economic as well as emotional interdependence. Some men found in the YMCA an alternative to mainstream patterns of heterosexual marriage and family life, choosing to live their lives as bachelors in community with other men.
But with the turn of the century, social perceptions of gender and sexuality began to change, and as new paradigms of masculinity evolved, certain forms of male intimacy were regarded as deviant. After 1900, Gustav-Wrathall argues, the YMCA grew more hostile to masculine love, and, through programs in physical training, sought to expand its control over the emotional and sexual lives of its members. Ironically, while the YMCA's emphasis on physical culture served outwardly to reinforce new images of masculinity, its gymnasiums and dormitories became primary sites for illicit male sexual encounters.
Gustav-Wrathall presents the YMCA as an institution of profound contradictions, reflective of the broader society's views of same-sex love and sexuality."
