Lesbian Film Review of Some Prefer Cake

Lesbian Film Review of Some Prefer Cake

Some Prefer Cake (1997)

An appetizing and seductive comedy that centers around the friendship and tangled love lives of two young San Francisco women: the aspiring comedian and sexually carefree lesbian Kira (Kathleen Fontaine) and her best friend Sydney (Tara Howley), an insecure food-obsessed straight woman. With only stage fright keeping her from a successful stand-up comedy career, the dark-haired beauty Kira drowns her professional problems by bedding a bevy of nearly nameless babes. With all the gory bedroom details recounted later to the rapt attention to her best friend Sydney, a gal who'd rather eat her sweets than to bother with a relationship. But just when Kira thinks she's fallen in love (with the lovely Desi del Valle) she finds herself stalked (in that Alex from Fatal Attraction fashion) by Katie (Machiko Saito), a deranged and delusional former one-night conquest. Will she find inspiration and stability in a relationship or will the calculating Katie have her way? A delirious mix of sexual entanglements, heady melodrama and tender humor.

An inventive blend of noir, science fiction and a lesbian adventure tale, this quirky, audacious first feature from Hilary Brougher (who also wrote the script) is a wonderful example of adventurous independent American filmmaker. Tucker Harding (Terumi Matthews) is a beautiful young woman and self-assured pulp crime writer living with her sultry female lover Ophelia (Belinda Becker) in New York in 1953. But through a mysterious quirk in linear time, she finds herself, when just going out for some coffee, transposed to present day East Village. It is here that she meets up with Isaac, a friend from her past, and befriends Drew, a suicidal young woman and aspiring writer who seems to have a cosmic relationship with Tucker. As the story unfolds, Tucker discovers she is not the only unwitting “time freak” in town (1950s H-bomb detonations the cause) but that she will (or has been) murdered. A promising romance is begun, and an embittered passion holds the reign to her future. Filmed both black & white and color, this adventurous tale, belying its low budget, goes beyond the normal lesbian-themed fare into delightful, uncharted territory infused with cool intelligence.

This movie is truly something special. It is a tender, touching and yes, sexy movie about first love. The acting is superb, especially by heartbreakingly beautiful Essy Persson. The editing, photography and direction is superb. A wonderful movie that reminds one not only of the beauty of love, but also its pain and heartbreak.

Jane (Muth) appears to be like any other teenage girl, except to herself. The cutest boy in the class flirts with her, but all she feels is the dull ache of attraction for the adorable new girl in class, Taylor (Lagano). Jane's mom (Stockard Channing) assumes that her daughter is just like any other fifteen-year-old girl, confused about her adolescence.
Fifteen-year-old Jane lives the quintessential suburban life with her parents and younger brother (whom she can't stand). Although popular, Jane has always felt somewhat different than her peers. However, after meeting Taylor, a transfer student at school, Jane's life changes irrevocably. Jane and Taylor become close friends very quickly, and Jane feels a connection to Taylor that she's never felt with her other friends. One night, Taylor kisses Jane, and it becomes clear to Jane that she's found what has been lacking in her life. As her relationship with Taylor deepens, Jane realizes that she has to face her family and come out, which happens in less than perfect circumstances, but it never is.
Stockard Channing is superb in a role that must have been rather difficult for her. Her support for gay causes is well known and a role as the mother who can't accept her gay daughter is a stretch. RuPaul plays her gay best friend, who lays his friendship on the line with her over Jane. Jane's teacher Ms. Walcott (Rowan) is outstanding in a role one wishes existed in the sixties, the teacher who cares for the gay kids! And a big brava for Ellen Muth as Jane! The openly lesbian writer/director Lee Rose deserves kudos for creating what could be the ultimate film for PFLAG meetings, gay-straight alliances, and to your parents to help educate them.

The Watermelon Woman  (1997)
Director: Cheryl Dunye

This, the first African-American lesbian feature film, is a fascinating, effervescent tale of love discovered and history uncovered. Director Dunye plays an aspiring filmmaker (and current video store employee) who becomes obsessed with an African-American actress from the 1930s and '40s -- a beautiful and seemingly intellgent woman whose roles were limited to "mammie"-type characters. Along Dunye's search for more information on the real woman, she finds love (or is that simply lust?) in the arms of a white woman, further complicating her life. Low budget yet ambitious, intelligent and entertaining.

The Wild Side (1995)
Starring: Christopher Walken, Joan Chen - Director: Donald Cammell

"The Wild Side" is a good description of the tone of this film. The whole thing is wild, erratic, and ultimately hilarious in its pace, plot, and casting. Anne Heche, a banker, becomes a call girl for reasons never fully explained, but the reasons are ultimately unimportant. After attracting the attention of a client (Christopher Walken), she meets his girlfriend (Joan Chen) and the rest is soft-core history. Although the sex scenes between Chen and Heche were erotic, they weren't believable as being in love. But even they weren't as odd a couple as Chen and Walken, who cracked me up every scene they shared. Walken's psychotic, rapist driver has no redeeming qualities at all, and I enjoyed watching Walken screw him over. As usual, Walken manages to impress in a horribly written role. Heche is given the most (acting) meat to chew, but she is unimpressive. Chen is given little to do other than cry and be sexy, which she accomplishes. The relationship between Heche and Chen is ultimately unsatisfying because it is not developed.

From the director of I've Heard the Mermaids Singing comes this refreshingly liberating tale of lesbian love. Camille (Pascale Bussières) is a Christian academician romantically involved with Martin (Henry Czerny), a nice enough fellow teacher more interested in advancement than romance. Camille's repressed emotions and desire for true love come to the surface after she meets flamboyant circus performer Petra (Rachael Crawford). Despite being diametrical opposites, the two are attracted to each other. Initially denying her sexual attraction to the exotic African-Canadian Petra, Camille plays a repetitive game of "I want you, no, I don't" (see: Claire of the Moon). That is, until Camille finally unleashes her pent-up desires in one of the more sexually charged lesbian love scenes ever filmed. Its much appreciated romanticism and the casting of two attractive women aside, the film suffers from a symbolism-laden, seen-it-before screenplay and a semi-catatonic lead actress (Bussières). However, the handling of the relationship is both exciting and hopeful, conditions that are much too rare in the typical film that tackles queer love.

There are Indie films, and then there are stay-with-you always amazing Indie films. The cast is only the icing to a tale weaved so subtly the ending would blow you away (well, not to give it away). Like the culinary theme, which also left me hungry, this is one film which will whet your appetite for the acutely accurate portrayal of the immigrant society in America. I know as an Asian I was stunned by the director's resounding voice in her unflinching representation of that community. And the range of emotions it will evoke will leave you laughing, crying, thinking...just from one scene to another. I also appreciate the really uncheesy, un-gratituous lesbian story-line (but of course a lady director would know better!)
