This National Film Board of Canada documentary takes a look at lesbian lifestyles in the 1950s and features interviews with women who lived through this era of prejudice and intolerance. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, co-writers and directors Aerlyn Weissman and Lynne Fernie created a movie that's entertaining, as well as informative. Forbidden Love is an intriguing, well-structured film that manages to be funny, hip and engaging thanks to the lively and open interview subjects. Interspersed between the interviews and archival footage is a tongue-in-cheek mini-drama in the style of the lesbian dime novels that were popular at the time. Narrated by actress/playwright/novelist Ann-Marie MacDonald, the mini-drama features the underrated Stephanie Morgenstern as a country girl new to the big city and Lynne Adams as the object of her affection. It eventually builds to a surprisingly explicit resolution that actually shifts the documentary over into the category of erotica. - D.K. Latta (Amazon)

This one-hour documentary captures the spirit of the diverse group of people that turn out each month to find fun, friendship and fulfillment. Meet the players, "Bingo Verifying Divas" (BVDs), sponsors, mothers, fathers, AIDS activists and people coming into contact with the gay community for the first time.

It's target audience is straight people, probably family and friends of gay people, who have a need to understand homosexuality better. If you are gay, you don't need to watch this video per se because you know it all--but if you are coming out or are having a hard time conveying to important people in your life what growing up gay was like, this is a great place to start, perhaps by watching it together, etc.

It's the story of Stephen Matthews, a gay Michigan man who was falsely accused, along with his father, of molesting his 5-year-old son. Despite a lack of physical evidence and the fact that the boy's lurid testimony was coerced, Matthews and his father went to prison. They were later released and then retried. Their struggle lasted 10 years, but its legacy remains.

Women directors don't have it easy and lesbian directors in particular face serious problems producing their work. The documentary Lavender Limelight focuses on seven prominent lesbian filmmakers and examines both the frustration's and the ecstasies inherent in their art. Interviews with directors such as Jennie Livingston (Paris Is Burning) and Monika Treut (Virgin Machine) illuminate the process of filmmaking with insightful answers to penetrating questions, often exposing the tenacious sense of humour required to succeed in the business.

Unlike the many "you are there" documentaries that were made on the April 1993 Lesbian and Gay March on Washington, this "personal video" focuses on a group of gay men who convene on the weekend of the march in a D.C. home for a friendship reunion. Super low-budget and mildly interesting, the video chronicles the host's frantic preparations as well as his relationships with his lover and visitors. Their discussions on such issues as coming out, gays in the military and gay/lesbian rights are marred by a simplistic, "Can't we all just get along?" mentality.

In this highly praised two-part presentation, Brian McNaught explains the unique aspects of growing up gay and makes real the experience through his richly-detailed and thought-provoking guided imagery. He also tells his own riveting story of coming out to his Irish Catholic, Midwestern family, and then addresses often-cited but erroneously interpreted biblical quotes. Recently updated, this video can easily be used in segments. Since first released, it has been a popular educational tool.
